Protect: Defend Brand Terms, Hero Keywords, and Buy Box Before You Grow

Two zero-order terms. Same spend. Same campaign. Same week.

One gets Add Negative. The other gets Review listing — protected core keyword.

Same dashboard. Different diagnosis. That's the Protect tab — and it's why blanket negation rules destroy accounts.

Protect vs. optimize: same symptom, different disease

Optimize asks: "Should this traffic stop?"

Protect asks: "Is something we must keep failing to convert — and why?"

When a term matches your catalog, your brand, or a deliberate exact target, zero orders usually mean:

  • Buy Box loss or suppression
  • Price or coupon mismatch
  • Review velocity drop
  • Image or variation confusion
  • Inventory stockout

Cutting the keyword hides the problem. Fixing the offer fixes every keyword on that ASIN.

Protected keywords: explicit "do not block"

Some terms are strategically non-negotiable — your brand name, core category head terms, hero product descriptors.

Define them in Ad Insights → Settings → Protected keywords.

Protected terms with clicks and zero orders never receive negative-keyword recommendations. They surface in Protect as Core Keyword Signals — with spend, click history, and a listing/pricing review path.

For agencies: this gives you audit-ready rationale when a client asks why you didn't negate "their main keyword."

Hero exact keywords: never negate your own target

If you're bidding exact match on "gold hoop earrings" in a Hero campaign, a zero-order week on that search term is not irrelevant traffic. It's your target failing to convert.

Simentri applies an exact keyword guard:

  • Below the exact keyword click floor (default 20) → Watching, not enough data
  • Above the floor with zero orders → Review listing + optional Lower Bid to stop bleed
  • Never Add Negative on the hero exact phrase in the same ad group

Buy Box and inventory: ads amplify broken offers

Buy Box percentage below threshold triggers Protect-level review. Running ads when you don't reliably win the Buy Box is paying to send shoppers to a competitor's offer.

Simentri also watches account-level CVR decay — when conversion trends down week over week, Grow recommendations suppress until Protect-level issues resolve. Scaling into a broken conversion funnel is how ACOS "mysteriously" breaks after a good month.

On the Summary tab, the Product Conversion Watchlist (Top ASIN CVR) flags ASINs where multiple keywords fail together — a strong signal the listing is the problem, not individual terms.

Own-ASIN leaks and brand defense

Your ASIN appearing as a product target in a non-defensive prospecting campaign is structural waste — you're paying to intercept your own traffic.

These surface under Protect or structural findings with a Review path: consolidate brand defense, remove redundant targets, align campaign intent.

Brand defense isn't just "bid on your brand name." It's impression share on terms where competitors conquest — and keeping your own catalog from competing against itself.

When protect blocks grow

The Grow tab checks account health before bid or budget increases:

  • CVR decay active → scale suppressed; candidates may move to Watching
  • Buy Box risk → grow safety gate
  • Dead product targets on converting campaigns → optimize review before scale on that campaign

Sequence matters: Protect before Grow isn't bureaucracy. It's preventing you from pouring gasoline on a conversion problem.

What to do this week

  1. Add protected keywords — brand + top 5–10 category terms you never auto-negate
  2. Check Buy Box % on advertised ASINs before any Grow actions
  3. Open Protect tab after Optimize — don't skip it when badge count is zero; scan Summary watchlist anyway
  4. Hero exact failures → listing audit first, negate never

The bottom line

Protect is where good PPC managers earn trust — by not killing strategic traffic when the offer is broken.

Simentri separates block from defend with rules, safelists, and ASIN-level distress detection — so your core terms survive a bad week.
